IVR

Updated September 2026

IVR is the phone menu that routes calls with recordings and keypad tones. What it is, why callers dislike it, and what an AI voice agent does instead.

What is an ivr?

IVR (interactive voice response) is the phone menu system that routes callers with recordings and keypad tones: press 1 for sales, press 2 for support. It routes calls; it resolves nothing itself.

IVR was built to sort callers into queues before a human could answer. It works at that, and callers still avoid it, because the caller's job (getting the thing done) is not the IVR's job (routing the call).

How does it work?

The system plays a recording, reads the keypad tone or a spoken keyword, and moves the call to a queue. Every layer of menu is another chance for the caller to hang up, and after hours the destination is usually a voicemail.

How does Sky do it?

Sky replaces the menu with a conversation: the caller says what they need, and Sky does it or hands off with context. There is no menu tree, no queue, and no hold queue either: every call is answered on the first ring, 24/7.

Frequently asked questions

Is an AI voice agent a kind of IVR?

No. An IVR routes calls with menus; an AI voice agent holds the conversation and completes the request. One sorts callers, the other serves them.

Why do callers dislike IVR menus?

Because the menu's job is routing, not helping. Every extra layer costs callers, and none of them resolves anything.

Can we keep our phone number if we replace the IVR?

Yes. Sky answers your existing number; nothing about your lines or carrier changes.
